I came up with a concept for a shoot with Arianny just in time for Halloween – what happens when a late night jaunt in a deserted cemetery meets up with a zombie attack? If you check out the video above, you’ll get a feel for how I interspersed Arianny’s 2013 calendar signing at the UFC Gym in Rosemead with behind the scenes footage of us in action at the zombie shoot, hair and makeup prep and highlights of the finished images. Luckily for Arianny, zombies didn’t faze her – had we featured clowns; that might have been a different story. We had a blast creating the zombie makeup! My go-to makeup artist Alicia Carbajal is not only talented when it comes to beauty makeup – but is seriously creative when it comes to special effects. Alicia taught me how to use liquid latex, oatmeal, 3rd degree burn makeup, three types of artificial blood and various makeup shading techniques to create the look of rotting, molded flesh. Thirty minutes from start to finish, done and done. The Walking Dead, here I come! I ended up applying the special effect makeup to myself and making a cameo in the shoot – can you spot me? Koko Blaq worked his styling magic and found a great location at Haunted Hollywood Sports in Bellflower for the shoot. This shoot is also featured on Mandatory. Share with your friends below!

I got the opportunity to do a full shoot with my old friend Jon. This was the first location shoot I have done with full lighting gear of a professional inline skater. It was a bit daunting to be able to catch him at the right moment when there is a slight delay with using my H4d. It takes some getting used to. I used 2 lights to light my scene. One was a backlight from up high to give a sharp highlight on his back. The other was the key on the exact opposite side. Instead of using the shutter speed to freeze my subject I decided to do a long exposure gathering all the light. Then popping the flash when he was where I wanted him with a pocket wizard. The result is below.

After being away from the rollerblading scene for about 15 years. I had the opportunity to go to the Blading Cup 2012 competition to hang out and take some pictures. It was very weird to bump into a handful of guys I hadn’t seen in years. Then to see where the sport and progressed to since I left. These guys competing were amazing.

Jon Julio, probably one of the hardest workers in the sport put on a great event. At the end of the day, still took some time to help me fit a pair of his Valo brand skates. I look forward to working with Jon in the near future.

I have a company called Optical Panacea with my business partner UFC fighter: Urijah Faber. We make unique artwork involving the UFC fighters. We recently got to do a shoot with Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis, a light heavy weight contender. Sometimes when you meet these guys you don’t know what to expect because their persona they have on TV are completely different than they have in person. Well on TV Phil is down to earth and funny, exactly how he is in person. I think we were mainly laughing the whole time. You wouldn’t know he was a fighter unless he told you because of how friendly he is. However he is a pretty big dude with big hands and feet, I would not want to get punched by this guy for sure.

The sales vp of Broncolor was nice enough to let me try out some of his gear which a couple Scoro power packs. What is unique about these power packs is that they are able to do strobe effects. So you can actually catch a person in movement. This technique makes for some really interesting images. Thank you Greg from Broncolor!!!

Arianny Celeste and Hasselblad feature…

I have been working with UFC fighters for the past couple years and have always wanted to do a shoot with Ring Girl Arianny Celeste. After meeting her a couple times I still wasn’t able to secure a shoot. Luckily, Urijah Faber later texted me that Arianny wanted to work with me. Bing, bang, boom I got a date to shoot. Around the same time, I had been asked by Hasselblad to do a small feature on one of my shoots. I knew this would be a perfect joint opportunity.

After some stressful days leading up to the event, everything fell into place. As usual I made my call to Phu Styles to help me style the shoot. She showed up with amazing wardrobe and accessories. Christy Jewel, my favorite sales rep from Calumet, hooked up some Profoto gear. Matthew Frary from Hasselblad came with his videographer Victory (an amazing talented photographer). On top of all that, my good friend Mike Aniff supplied me with some very unique guns for the shoot, a customized AR-15 and a Colt handgun.

We began the day with a video interview about myself, which I felt went pretty smoothly. Usually I’m super awkward but this time I felt really comfortable. Victory was a great interviewer, she made the process real easy I will be done editing them soon and they will be posted.

After Arianny was done with her hair and make up we were ready to shoot. We did it all relatively quickly as usual and the pictures turned out great.
